Philip Richter grew up with horses and has been actively competing on the “A” show circuit his entire life. Philip began riding in the short stirrup at age six and he later competed in the pony hunter divisions, equitation, junior hunters, and junior jumpers.
In 1983, Richter was pony hunter champion at the Hampton Classic aboard “Raincheck”. Riding “Pico” in 1987, Richter was leading junior/amateur rider at the International Jumping Derby in Rhode Island. In 1990, Richter piloted his American Thoroughbred, “Sasquatch”, to victory at the year-end Grand Prix Farms Amateur-Owner Hall of Fame Classic in Baltimore, MD. In 2004, Richter showed his chestnut mare, “Maroline”, to 3rd place in the High Amateur Derby at Spruce Meadows in Calgary. In 2006 and 2007, Richter rode his 22-year old Russian bred, “Chekhov”, to back to back amateur-owner championships at the Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows.
In 2008 Richter rode “Glasgow” to victory in the $10,000 Mirror Lake Inn Amateur-Owner Classic, and was high Amateur-Owner champion, at Lake Placid. In 2009 “Glasgow” was champion at the Old Salem Farm Horse Show and also won the $15,000 Cavalor Show Jumping Hall of Fame Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic at the Devon Horse Show. In 2010, Richter was high Amateur-Owner champion at the Winter Equestrian Festival aboard “Ray Ray” and was reserve champion at the Hampton Classic on Glasgow. In 2009, Richter piloted “Glasgow” to 2nd place in the Mirror Lake Inn High Amateur Owner Classic behind Louis Jacobs on “Kachina”. He came back with “Glasgow” to win The Classic in 2011.
In 2012, Phillip entered his first-ever Reining competition and came away with a win! In 2013 Richter won his third consecutive Low Amateur-Owner Jumper Championship at the Hampton Classic, riding “Firefly”.
Richter sits on the Board of Directors of the Hampton Classic Horse Show, the Lake Placid Horse Shows and The USET Foundation for whom he is treasurer. He is a graduate of Boston College and holds an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business.
