Darragh Kenny hails from County Offaly in Ireland and comes from an equestrian family. He started competing on ponies when he was ten. He rode at the Junior European Championships and the Young Rider European Championships. He won a training bursary at the RDS Dublin Horse Show in 2007 to come to the U.S. and work for Missy Clark and John Brennan at North Run Stables in Warren, Vermont. He returned in the winter of 2008 to compete for them on the Florida circuit.
Kenny won nine grand prix classes in 2009/2010, including the Grand Prix at the Lake Placid Horse Show where he won on “Gael Force” and also placed fifth on “Armani”. He also picked up wins at St. Clement’s Saratoga Horse Show, the Vermont Summer Festival, Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament and the Jacksonville (FL) Horse Show. He also competed at the FEI World Cup Final in Geneva, Switzerland. Darragh spent the month of May 2010 competing the bay gelding “Obelix”, owned by Trade Winds Farm, for the Irish Team at Nations’ Cup events in La Baule, France, Rome, Italy and St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Kenny continued to excel in 2011, picking up a Grand Prix win at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida on “Gael Force” in the WEF Challenge Cup. He also had three Grand Prix wins in Vermont.
In 2012, Kenny won four grand prix classes including becoming just the fifth rider to sweep both of Lake Placid’s Grand Prix championships in the same year.
Kenny had many placings at international shows throughout 2013, and 2014 was a particularly influential year in his career. He won the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix with “Alpha VDL” at HITS Ocala, Florida, followed by six wins at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Canada. He then went on to compete as a member of the Irish Jumping Team with “Imothep” at the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France, where he finished in 12th place overall.
Kenny enjoyed many top placings with his horses as well as a win aboard “Picolo” at the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival CSI5* in Florida, and also won a top class at the CSI5* in Antwerp, Belgium aboard “Belle Rock.” While competing on the European circuit, Kenny was an integral part of the Irish team that won the 2015 Nations Cup CSIO 5* on home ground at the Dublin Horse Show.
Kenny scored several top placings on the 2016 WEF winter circuit, winning the $130,000 CSI 3* Grand Prix, the $216,000 CSIO 4* Grand Prix and $35,000 WEF Challenge Cup, all aboard Red Star D’Argent. Kenny was also the overall winner of the twelve-week Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Series. At the Royal Winter Fair in Canada, Kenny won the $35,000 Brickenden Trophy with “Charly Brown” and placed ninth in the FEI World Cup qualifier with “Cassini Z.” Kenny then off to Europe, earning top placings in Kronenberg, The Netherlands, Madrid, Spain, and the fie-star London Olympia Horse Show where he raced to victory in the Snowman Stakes and Holly Speed Stakes riding “Fixdesign Funke van ‘t Heike.”
In the opening of the 2017 season, Kenny and “Bolero 111” won $25,000 Upperville Colt and Horse Show 1.40m Jumpers. At the Winter Equestrian Festival, Kenny had many successes including a WEF Challenge Cup aboard his new mount “Gasper van den Doorn” and went on to claim victory the $86,000 WEF Challenge Cup with another new mount, “Billy Onslow”. He also placed 13th with “Cassini Z” in the FEI World Cup qualifier at the 2017 CP Palm Beach Masters.
Part of the 2017 Global Champions Tour competitions, Kenny is a member of the “Paris Panthers” in the Global Champions League along with riders Nayel Nassar, Jack Towell, Jennifer Gates and Lillie Keenan. Kenny competed in the Miami leg of the Tour and then went on to Shanghai, China, where he helped his team claim the win aboard “Charly Chaplin S.”
